Phila. Area Chapter of the National Stuttering Association

Welcome to the Philadelphia Area Chapter of the National Stuttering Association

If you stutter, you are not alone! And there is so much that can be done!

We are a self-help support group, made up of people who stutter, who help each other help ourselves deal with the problems of stuttering. Together we seek to:

bullet Understand, accept, and control our stuttering to the best of our ability;
bullet Increase our self-confidence and self-esteem, regardless of fluency;
bullet Improve communication skills; and
bullet Learn to make speech an easier and more enjoyable experience.

Our meetings are held on the first and third Thursdays of each month at the Bala Cynwyd Library, Old Lancaster Road and Highland Avenue, in Bala Cynwyd, PA (a few blocks west of City Avenue and St. Joseph University).  The meetings are held in the Meeting Room on the second floor (unless otherwise noted).

Our regular meetings are held from 7:00 to 8:45 p.m.  Admission to our meetings is free.  (See detailed directions by clicking on the link below.)

Family members and speech-language professionals or students are also welcome.

Our meetings offer a warm, supportive environment in which stuttering is fully accepted. We do not require the use of any particular fluency method. Members are free to stutter openly, to use voluntary stuttering, or to practice whatever fluency methods they feel comfortable with.

We generally begin meetings with relaxation and speaking exercises and end by giving extemporaneous speeches to the group. We frequently discuss our individual concerns and experiences. We may explore ideas about the causes and treatment of stuttering and experiment with various fluency techniques. Occasionally we have guest speakers and special presentations. Everyone is given an ample opportunity to participate and is encouraged (but not compelled) to do so.

Usually, our meetings will be devoted to group discussion and sharing.  Sometimes there are special presentations or workshops devoted to practicing fluency and communications skills.

Upcoming Meeting Schedule.

We are affiliated with the National Stuttering Association, a nationwide, non-profit organization dedicated to bringing hope, dignity, support, education, and empowerment to children and adults who stutter. The NSA publishes a newsletter (Letting Go) and other literature, holds an annual convention and regional workshops, and is an advocate on behalf of the stuttering community. (We encourage everyone who stutters, or who has a child or other family member who stutters, to join the NSA and support its efforts.)
